Last Saturday 26th March the WWF Earth Hour Awards were held at the Australian Contemporary Museum in Circular Quay, Sydney.

During the night the guests enjoyed a great variety of  finger food, organic beers, very refreshing cucumber cocktails and open bar with an excellent performance of Australian Idol winner Wes Carr.

Afterward, the audience came together to listen the most inspiring stories of Australians who are “Going Beyond the Hour” for the planet. The ceremony was hosted by television personality and Earth Hour Ambassador Jamie Durie joined by ex-minister Peter Garret and other personalities.

Here are the winners of the WWF Earth Awards 2011:

The Young Panda Award: Hanan Hassan & Julia Lin, PLC Junior School (Pymble, NSW)

The Workplace Champion Awards: Benjamin Grimshaw, Hilton Hotel (Sydney, NSW)

The Futuremakers Award: Lloyd Linson-Smith, Inventor (Oakey, QLD)

The Lifetime Achievement Award: Burr Dodd & Lolo Houbein, Trees For Life (Brooklyn Park, SA)

The Education Award: Cate Lawrence, Green Renters (Brunswick, VIC)

The People’s Choice Award: Catherine Lee, The Point Preschool (Oyster Bay, NSW)

After the ceremony, Axle Whitehead performed on the stage and as the Earth Hour was approaching the guests were invited outside the  venue to enjoy ice-creams and to be part of the Earth Hour. At 20:30pm sharp the Opera House and Harbour Bridge switch off their lights and the celebration began with sparkling candles and the gorgeous performance of the Hula Hoop Group.

A great night to be remembered and a great way to support this amazing cause of environmental awareness. Congratulations to all the winners!

Members of the public are being invited to attend the first ever WWF Earth Hour Awards on Saturday 26 March 2011. The exclusive VIP event will take place in the Foundation Hall at the Museum of Contemporary Arts (MCA), Sydney from 6 – 9:30pm.

Hosted by TV personality and Earth Hour Ambassador, Jamie Durie, this inspiring evening will celebrate Australians who are going beyond the hour and making a difference to our planet.

“Earth Hour is a great celebration of the efforts people everywhere are making to live sustainably. We look forward to sharing Australia’s most inspiring ideas from the WWF Earth Hour Awards,” said WWF-Australia Chief Executive Dermot O’Gorman.

Entertainment will be provided by top Australian performers Axle Whitehead and Wes Carr. Guests can also enjoy exquisite cocktails and selection of canapés, which will also be served throughout the evening.

Just before the lights are switched off at 8:30pm, guests will be escorted outside the MCA to First Fleet Park to observe Sydney’s most iconic buildings, the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, as they go dark for Earth Hour.
