The Enmore Theatre was the place for the next secret show with PLACEBO doing the honors to delight the myspace audience! with eager fans queuing up as early as 7am it wasn’t long before a large crowd gathered and the line was long formed around the corner by 12pm, an audience with a solid mix of teen girls and boys, emo kids and the few old schools doing the rounds.

Placebo greeted the audience and quickly opened the MySpace secret show with “For What It’s Worth” which is the first official single from Placebo’s sixth studio album, Battle for the Sun, the mostly teen crowd responded by singing out loud every note giving the song an awesome chorus accompaniment! unusually Brian put the guitar aside on this one to sing the song with a tambourine in such great tune!

Soon another great song followed, this time the band delivered a very meaningful and heartfelt song from the album MEDS “Because I Want You” This is about a drinking problem within a relationship problem, ‘all I ever do is stumble into you, my memory’s hazy and I’m scared to be alone’ suggests one half of the relationship comes home pissed all the time, stumbling into the other half – looking for comfort and companionship when all they’re doing is tearing them apart by drinking, the lyrics in the chorus and first strain show that he still loves her, and maybe enough to break his addiction; With bassist Stefan Olsdal switching between guitar and keyboards the English trio played their 3rd track of the night with “Blind” also from the album Meds, everyone loves this one, because it’s easy to understand, let’s say- not very complicated word- composition it’s definitely one of those songs that grow on you and take on a different meaning and feeling every time you listen to it.

Moving on to the forth anthem of the set with a song from the same album as the previous 2 tracks “Meds” blasted through the air, a song is about a guy who has to take about 8 different kind of drugs for depression and so on without them he has audiovisual hallucinations, although the lyrics are fairly simple they work really well and Just because the music isn’t complex it doesn’t make it any-less quality,This is a great song of eccentric rock style, being both compelling in its simplicity and striking in how it combines nearly atonal background with half-sung lyrics in order to produce a wholly musical feel.
Nearing the end of the night now 5th song “20 years” , from their greatest hits album “Once More With Feeling” I think the lyrics are exactly what they’re supposed to mean…..how? well….he is afraid that time is passing too fast, and even though along the way it’ll be fun (a golden age I know) there will always be problems with friends like in the verse where he sings “though some may hold the rose some hold the rope” (where his friends might go suicidal, problems like that) I’m not 100% sure… but then again, who is? besides Brian Molko himself……..?

and finally the end of the night after leaving the stage for a minute or so and having the crowd asking for more Brian and Stefan came back on stage to perform a song also from the album PLACEBO called “Teenage Angst” which as the name suggest the then teenager Brian expressing what his mind holds in anger and the thoughts of self destruction and death he admits that some of the lyrics were inspired by the words of his mother as in the line “Since I Was Born I Started To Decay” explains Brian. “She was talking about ageing, wrinkling, skin drying up and stuff. This was when I was about 14. She said that as soon as you pop out of the womb you start to deteriorate”….strong words for strong lyrics and the result….. a truly amazing song!!

Its hard to believe that with such a small set a band can please a crowd! sure the set had only 6 songs but I can firmly say the audience walked away with a massive smile on their faces! well done placebo!! and thank you so much myspace secret shows!!

This is a truely terrible review. Aside from the lack of proper grammar and punctuation, you’ve made false assumptions regarding the meanings of songs, and posted false infomation (Brian needs to be medicated for audiovisual hallucinations? Um, no. And you might want to check which album ‘Twenty Years’ is on. And have another listen and rethink your ‘meaning’)
Please try proof reading before posting, and better luck next time.

  2. Zoe says:

Corrections: Brian Molko, not “Moloko”. Regarding Placebo’s discography – the song ’20 Years’ is not on their debut album, in fact it was released several years later, and can be found on their greatest hits “Once More With Feeling”. Also, quoting part of your review:
“Brian Moloko (sic) a guy has to take about 8 different kind of drugs for depression and so on without them he has audiovisual hallucinations…”
Please clarify whether you mean Molko is the one taking the drugs for depression, or if he has stated the song is about a guy who has to take these kinds of anti-depressants? Confusing the lifestyle of a fictional character in a song with a real person can cause a lot of unnecessary rumours.
