Last Friday June 3rd, we had the honor to be selected by Paramount Pictures to be part of an exclusive roundtable among a few websites, with Super 8 director J.J Abrams. We were very flattered to have the opportunity to ask him a few questions about Super 8, so we focused on the music, influences and the viral campaign.

Here check out our exclusive interview with J.J. Abrams:

The music is very important in every single film. As Steven Spielberg has John Williams, you have Michael Giacchino. What role has the music in your projects and especially in Super 8?

Yes, I’m glad you brought on Michael. Obviously, the soundtrack to any film is critical and the obvious example is, if you watch Star Wars’ scroll at the beginning without the music is a very different experience, he laughs. There is something about the world that Michael Giacchino has done with the projects I’ve been involved in. He has always elevated everything, sometimes has created the mood entirely. He is someone who made super 8 films when we was a kid and working among him this movie, unlike the numerous TV shows  we’ve done together or movies, this one in particular had the kind of meaning for him as it did for me, because it was his childhood.

We work together throughout the editing process and pre-post. Defining, working on the score, what the music could it be and where… and he had to find a balance musically as I was working on finding a balance visually. There are tones, there were different themes. There is a family theme, there was the theme of mystery and this creature and there was the theme for Alice and our relationships, and finding a way to come along all that together is hard work, which I think he really did beautifully. I think this is one of his best scores. It was his childhood, the music was from his experiences back in this movie, and the reason what it touch me so much, is that it was so meaningful to him that I could hear it, I could feel it, I don’t need to understand it, he doesn’t need to explain it to me, I just can tell it was meaningful. I’m not saying he doesn’t write great scores when is not personal things, he just does… but is something about this score, that feels so profoundly emotional and it really does feel like it comes from a different place for him.

Super 8 has many iconic elements from many different movies like E.T, Close encounters, Cloverfield and It Comes From Outer Space from the 50’s. What would you say that it was the film that inspired you to come out with Super 8?

It really wasn’t anyone film. It was the experience of been one of those kids making movies in the late 70’s, and at this time of course, I was profoundly affected by the cinema of the time. So it was a combination of movies of Steven, George Lucas, Ridley Scott, John Carpenter, Cronenberg and Romero. It was just all this movies that made me love the idea of making movies, so going back to this time and writing the script and making the movie, it wasn’t ever about looking at Close encounters, E.T, Polstergeist, Goonies, Stand by me or any of this movies that I love.

Was really about, looking at that period of time and knowing of Steven’s involvement as a producer, that I was completely free to embrace the “Amblinness” of the movie, I didn’t feel self-conscious, it was like It’s an Amblin movie, I’m gonna make an Amblin movie!, that means if  the kids ride in their bicycles I shouldn’t feel guilty..I should celebrate.  If this spectacular thing happens on main street, that’s cool!

The great thing about Amblin it is that embrace heart, humanity, parent-child relationships, embrace first love and best friendship. Embrace confronting the things that scares you the most and finding your own voice and becoming a leader not a follower and learning that you can deal with tragedy and survival. There was all these things, that I love the potential about the movie that Amblin gave me license and Steven gave me license to truly embrace and dive into and suppose to try lightly and that was the biggest impact that clearly you can cite thousands of influences, like you can probably in anyone in movies. To me the Amblin umbrella aloud every journey I do coexist weather is successful or peaceful.

All your films and projects are very mysterious and your viral campaigns are amazing. Why do you think that those viral campaigns work for J.J. Abrams’ movies and don’t work for other films?

Well, they work for some movies and they don’t work sometimes. We have a very talented guy, that kind of overseen the viral stuff and even though the Super 8 app that he has developed and that stuff I think is exactly as the movie itself. They try to figure it out what we wanna do, play with or experience, have access to or solve if we are going to be involved in this project.

Is not about thinking what they will do, or what they’ll want. It’s about thinking, this is kind of a fun idea, let’s try this! …some works and some don’t like everything, but it’s an element of advertising that I’m sure ultimately doesn’t really make a big difference in the audience that want to see the film. Is one of those things I just think is a kind of goodwill. No one, is forced to play with, look at or get involved with that stuff, but is there if you want to.  Is just the kind of thing that keeps alive the spirit of the project and we are thinking in cool stuff to do in line to… I like that stuff!

So there you have, I hope you have enjoyed the interview as much as we did. And remember that “Super 8” opens in cinemas this week, and as we told you before this is one of the best movies we`ve seen in years, “a perfect job full of Abrams and Spielberg’s magic”, so don’t miss out!

Super 8 releases in Australian cinemas on June 9th

As promised a video of the Australian premiere of “PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES” with Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) himself walking the “Black Carpet”.

As usual we tried to film as much fans as possible, and on the footage you can see how Mr. Rush stopped and did photos for every person around, a total gentleman and a world-class actor.

And don`t forget to check our coverage “On The Spot” for the venue here, with photos and more!

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, is NOW SHOWING ONLY IN CINEMAS!

note. Music by Hans Zimmer. The music in this video was used without comercial purposes and only intends to make this “fan video” more interesting.

The Australian premiere of “Pirates of the Caribbean: on stranger tides” was held yesterday, May17th at George St. cinemas, with a very special guest, Geoffrey Rush, Captain Barbossa himself walked the “Black Carpet” among some local celebrities.

It was a great venue, with kids walking around with Pirate customs, fans of the saga and people who wanted to see this amazing actor closer, and none of them was disappointed.

Rush arrived at 6.15 pm as it was scheduled, he immediately meet and greet the fans around the carpet, before doing all the media. He happily signed autographs asking the names of every single person around making the best personalized autographs ever dreamed for any fan. Not only that, Mr. Rush also did photos with almost everyone there. Hand shakes, kisses, hugs were also on the list, showing all the crowd what a great kind of person he is, despite the fact he is one of the best actors in the film industry, Oscar awarded and nominated almost every year, he still keeps his modest attitude around, an amazing example for other growing actors and celebrities in general.

After the first round of happy fans, Geoffrey Rush went to the media area. He was very talkative with everyone, taking his time to answer. Then he posed at the media wall next to his character poster and then on the main area, just to continue greeting more fans at the end of the carpet, again stopping for all of them and getting the love and admiration of everyone who wanted to meet him, dismissing the people trying to rush him inside the cinema.

Geoffrey Rush is for sure  a world class actor and a nice person…That is the spirit!

Here enjoy some of the postcards of the venue below:

About the film:
Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Rob Marshall, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” captures the fun, adventure and humor that ignited the hit franchise—this time in Disney Digital 3D™. Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow in an action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth and demise.  When Jack crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz), he’s not sure if it’s love—or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know who to fear more:  Blackbeard or the woman from his past.

Lost, Cloverfield, Fringe and Star Trek fans are you ready to scream and smile!…Because we have amazing news for you: Director J.J Abrams and Producer Brian Burke will come back to Down Under next June 1 and 2 to promote their new film: “SUPER 8”.

Abrams and Burke were previously here for one of the biggest movie events ever: The Star Trek world premiere on April 7, 2009.  Moreover we had the honour to met J.J in Sydney at that time as a fans, the day of the premiere back in 2009.

The very early days of Spotlight Report @ the Star Trek premiere with the director JJ Abrams

But the good news are not only those ones, because some of the cast members of the film will also come to our country. Still we don’t have the official list of who will come and if they will do a Red Carpet or if they will come only for press, but as soon as we find out we will post it here.

The official synopsis of the film:
In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more

“Super 8” will hit cinemas worldwide on June 9th 2011.

Super 8 definitely will be one of the films of the year, a must watch film!

Yesterday, thanks to Paramount Pictures Australia  we had the  honour of being one of the first few people (via our website)  around the world to watch 20 minutes of exclusive footage of  J.J. Abrams‘ new film “Super 8 which is also produced by Steven Spielberg.

The footage started with Abrams doing a small introduction, sharing some funny moments with Steven Spielberg. He recalls the first time he called Spielberg to ask him to join the film, and Spielberg said “yes let’s do it” and he hung up immediately after that.

Abrams, following his unique style didn’t want to show much of the film, so as to leave a lot of mystery that will leave the audience wanting to see more! He even joked saying “this is unfinished footage, so it’s better to not show it at all”. On the other hand, Abrams mentioned how hard the job was and how great was his cast, especially the amazing kids on the film, most of them new actors with  great future.

We don’t want to tell you much about the footage, we want to avoid any spoiler, but we must say that what we had seen was just incredible like the entire train crash sequence didn’t look like unfinished footage at all, because the effects make it look like so real. The lead actors (this group of kids doing “super 8″ movie) have such a nice chemistry between them that moviegoers will be reminded of the classic film “Stand by me”. Moreover, suspense scenes happen one after another that will lead the audience holding their breath while watching it.

Just for a teaser, the movie will make fans wonder about the mystery behind the cargo the train was carrying. The action packed footage even has some “Cloverfield” and “Lost” style elements as well.

One special scene, where there was an army with torches in the background arriving at the place of accident, personally brought back memories when we watched the beloved Spielberg’s “E.T” for the first time.

Definitely, Super 8 will be one of the biggest film of the year, one of the most secretive film projects of the last years and for sure a movie that will be a “must watch”, maybe more than one time in any cinema around the world.

This is the official synopsis of the film:

Thanks to Reckoning entertainment, we had the amazing chance to send trough some questions for our very own Australian band “Trial Kennedy” in regards of their new album “Living Undesigned” and the upcoming tour around the country.

Check our interview below (our questions in blue):

First of all guys, congratulations on the upcoming release of “Living Undesigned”.

1) One of the things that grabbed our attention is the album artwork. Can you tell us a bit about it?
Thankyou very much.
The artwork for this record is a lot simpler than our last (New Manic Art). The image was shot by a great photographer friend of ours Kane Hibberd. It is the concept of looking into the distance or future and not knowing what is ahead but stepping out positively and ready to take it all on.
Well at least that’s what I think it’s about

2) What would you say is the band’s favourite song of the album and why?
A big favourite song of the band is a song called ‘Exology’. It’s a real frantic up tempo ditty that is really exciting both musically, melodically and lyrically for all of Trial Kennedy.

3) “Sally” and “Arrest Room” seem to be particularly personal songs, perhaps inspired by real events.  Can you tell us the story behind those tracks?
Sally is a tale of visiting a previous love interest and the positives and negatives that come with approaching this sort of situation. It’s fictional of course 🙂
Arrest room is based on a story hay Tim our singer saw where a guy was jailed for rape for 20 years or so and was proved to be innocent the whole time. He saw this interview where this guy reunited with the person who put him behind bars. He forgave her for taking his life away. Crazy story

4) The album has a really varies a lot from rock tracks and ballads all together and we’ve read some comparison to Coldplay and Foo Fighters. How do you feel about those sorts of comparisons, and what other, if any, bands have an inspiration for Trial Kennedy?
Trial Kennedy are a band that is inspired by all types of music and bands that have carved their own path. Bands that have created their own sound. A band that prides themselves on these ethics are the bands we look up to.

5) Question for Tim. We know you’ve had some health issues. How did these experiences influence the album?
These scenarios haven’t affected the lyrical content of the record directly but have definitely brought the band tighter. Stuff like this puts emphasis on looking out for each other.

6) We’re interested to hear about your shows with Fall out boy and Birds of Tokyo. Can you share something about those experiences with us?
The Birds of Tokyo lads are a fine bunch of gentleman that put on a great show and right a damn good pop tune. Couldn’t be more proud of what they have achieved in Australia.
Bands like Fall Out Boy keep to themselves on tour so we didn’t have much to do with them. It is great to see how bands work on the next scale though.

7) What the fans can expect for the upcoming Trial Kennedy tour?
A bit of old, a bit of new. A lot of sweat and red wine. Some good moves (care of our bass player).
4 dudes that are really pumped to play and 4 dudes who feel very privileged to do what we do.

8) This question might be a bit premature, but do you have plans for a third album?
Definitely. We’ve started the ball rolling so we all don’t have to wait another three years for the next TK record.

Thanks for your time guys 🙂

In addition, you can also check Trial Kennedy’s tour dates here and our review for their new album “Living Undesigned”

As we promised this is the footage we recorded from the Australian premiere of “Water for elephants”.

We tried to film as much fans as possible from our media spot…we really hope that the moment when you met your idol for the first time is there.

Enjoy and don’t forget to check our full coverage “on the spot” with photos of the stars Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon and our interview with the director of the film Francis Lawrence.

We also invited you to check our movie review for the film here.

Water for Elephants releases on cinemas this May 12th.

Today was the day…the wait was over! We were there “On the spot” for the Australian premiere of Francis Lawrence’s “Water for Elephants”…check it out.

Sydney’s Pitt street pedestrian area was not the same because The Australian Premiere of “Water for Elephants” was held today Friday 6th May, 2011 along with special guest Hollywood superstars Robert Pattinson, Academy Award Reese Witherspoon and director Francis Lawrence, transforming the entire place in a total Carnival…The circus was in town as Christoph Waltz quotes on the film everyone there today was welcomed “To the mos spectacular show on Earth”.

The venue was one of the biggest red carpets seen in years, something big enough to be comparable with the Premiere of Baz Luhrman’s Australia. The massive 300 meters red carpet went from the sidewalk of Pitt St mall until the State Theatre in Market street.

Tons of fans were waiting for hours to meet their favorites celebrities, some of them arriving the day before camping there just to have the best spot. Most of them were specially waiting for the Twilight star Robert Pattinson. Obviously, the screaming of at least 2,000 people, teenagers mostly, could be heard from the distance as soon as R-Patz arrived around 6.30 pm.

R-Patz patiently stopped for every single person, signing everything and posing for photos with many die-hard fans, event taking the pictures himself to help the nervous and loyal fans who were very excited and shocked to see him for the first time ever Down Under. On the contrary, co-star Reese Witherspoon didn’t pose for photos with fans but she happily signed for everyone.

Walking through the red carpet were local celebrities: actress Teresa Palmer, Home and Away’s actors Lincoln Lewis & Luke Mitchell, Biggest loser’s Michelle Bridges, Australian idol winner Wes Carr, models Sophie Faulkiner & Erika Heynatz and Sophie Lowe between others.

Director Francis Lawrence (I am legend, Constantine)  had a quick chat with Spotlight Report about the film. We ask him about Water for elephant’s gorgeous photography and he replied saying:

“The circus was a beautiful thing to shoot, in the set we created a great world with beautiful costumes and an unbelievable tent. I had to pick a great light and other than that, it was the easy part. We have great cinematographers and they did a beautiful job“.

Lawrence, also denied the rumours about a sequel or a prequel of  “I am legend” starred by Will Smith.

Here enjoy some images from the Red carpet “On the Spot”:
