Get ready to travel to a galaxy far far away in April 2012 when the Gold Coast Film Festival (“GCFF”) joins forces with the Supanova Pop Culture Expo to bring the Gold Coast an entertainment experience that is out of this world!

The GCFF will move its festival date from November to April to coinside with the newly announced Gold Coast Supanova expo following a new three year cultural partnership between the GCFF and Supanova Pop Culture Industries. This partnership is exclusive to the GCFF and no other film festival in Australia will be afforded the same alignment.

The GCFF has seen unprecedented growth in the last two years under the leadership of Festival Director Casey Marshall Siemer, with attendance jumping 90% in 2009 and a further 65% in 2010.

Supanova Pop Culture Expo is Australia’s premier Pop Culture event bringing all aspects of the entertainment industry together in a celebration of film, television, gaming, comics, illustration, costuming, music, anime culture and technology. In 2010 attendance reached an all time high of 60,000 people across four cities (Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney). There is a natural synergy between the new Gold Coast Supanova Expo and the GCFF and it is anticipated that in 2012 several high profile celebrity guests will be attending and participating in complimentary activities at both events.

“I can only see positive outcomes from this partnership and I am very excited by the opportunities which are already presenting themselves. There is an obvious compatibility with our two events and the winners will be the fans and supporters who will get the opportunity to enjoy the pop culture expo supported and enhanced by a screen culture event, and vice versa. This will allow us to extend the experiences we offer our audiences.” Casey Marshall Siemer, Festival Director, Gold Coast Film Festival.

“Supanova has grown exponentially over the last decade which reflects the coming “out of the closet” of Geekdom, of us reaching our target audience of enthusiasts, and providing them opportunities to express themselves freely and interactively. In doing so we’ve sought to further embrace the creative process and to this end we started our Directors’ Day programming in Brisbane resulting in even greater relevance to a community that is inspired to create not just consume. In the Gold Coast Film Festival we’ve recognised a kindred event resulting in a cultural partnership where their innovative approach to screen culture activities will take Supanova to yet another level again and we are so very, very excited by the potential outcomes we are sure it will yield”. Daniel Zachariou, Event Director, Supanova.

The 2012 GCFF presented by Australia Fair Shopping Centre, will be held from April 20-29 over 10 days. The official program details will be announced in due course. For more details please see www.gcfilmfestival.com

Supanova Dates:

The next Brisbane Supanova will be held November 4, 2011 and the Gold Coast Supanova will be held April 21-22, 2012. For more details please see www.supanova.com.au

Supanova pop-culture expo
was held on Melbourne showgrounds last weekend 8-10th April and Spotlightreport.net travelled there to make you a complete idea of  this incredible convention.

Every year Supanova bring the best of pop culture with amazing stores, cosplayer contests, anime sessions, celebrity Q&A,  seminars, photo and signing sessions from beloved actors from tv shows and movies.

This autumn Melbourne was full of stars being TOM FELTON alias “Draco Malfoy”, one of the villians in the Harry Potter series, the most wanted by the fans. Long queues for signing and photo sessions didn’t stop fans to get close to him, even some of them traveling from Perth and Sydney just to meet him. Despiting the fact of how tired he was after hours of signing and photos, a relaxed and friendly Tom was enjoying every moment of the venue. Other supaguest invited were: Charisma Carpenter “Cordellia” and Clare Kramer “Glory” from Buffy the Vampire Slayer , Tahmoh Pennikett (Battle Star galactica), Peter Williams (Stargate SG-1), Jodelle Ferland (Silent Hill and Twiligh: eclipse), Denis O’Hare (True Blood), martial expert, stuntman and film star Richard Norton (The Octagon, Gymkata). Furthermore,  Simon Pegg and Nick Frost from the just released movie “Paul” were there to promote the movie and share with the fans on Saturday.

As usual Supanova was made by the fans, with tons of cosplayers of all ages and evenentire families in great costumes all over the place posing for photos. The AWF (Australasian wrestling federation) was also there  doing their best performance in the ring. More activities were dancing with Wii’s “Just dance”, playing with Xbox’s Kinetic, trading cards with the visitors enjoying every minute of the convention with their favourites actors, comic book artist and writers.

Other supaguest invited were Science-fiction writers: Rowena Cory Daniells (The King’s bastard, The usurper), Marianne de Pierres (Nylon Angel) and Robin Hobb (The inheritance and other stories and the rain wild chronicles). In between, fans enjoyed some signing sessions with Seiyu actress Yuko Miyamura (original voice of Asuka in Evangelion, Wedding peach, GTO and DBZ), Tiffany Grant (English voice for the same Character: Asuka in Evangelion) and producer Matt Greenfield, all of them signing Evangelion posters for free, thanks to madman entertainment, so it wasn`t a surprise to see long queues of fans as it was expected, with everyone of them smiling after get close to these true anime stars.

Even if Christopher Lloyd (Back to the future and the Adams family) cancelled at the last minute his appereance in Brisbane and Melbourne, Supanova didn’t dissapoint the fans, it was a complete experience and a great event opened for all ages always promoting anime, movies, science-fiction, toy and card collections plus amazing gifts for all tastes, katanas, masks, figurines etc. Giving the guests a free taste of the latest gaming experiences in different consoles and trading cards. Wrestling, cosplayer theatre and celebrity sessions were held all days, inviting families to enjoy the best of the pop-culture expo.

If all that sounds fun for you don’t miss the next Supanova convention that will be held in Sydney (17-19 June), Perth (24-26 June) with amazing stars such as the original cast of  “I Dream with Jeannie”. Moreover, the good news are for the back to the future fans, because as compensation for late cancelation of  Christopher Lloyd and just for Brisbane & Melbourne a new venue will be held on November this year for them with Lloyd himself there.
